Loki had brought it here because he had anticipated the Avengers being away for the day. There wasn't a soul in sight when he'd entered the building. He had double checked all the rooms before finally settling in the spacious living room, placing the small bundle in his arms carefully on the couch, tucking it safely into the corner. It huddled there, shaking from being wet, cold, and undoubtedly a little frightened.
It had been an inopportune rescue but the God of Lies couldn't ignore the pathetic mewling that had led him to the miserable creature. And when it had looked up at him with that sad face he hadn't had it in him to leave it there in the cold rain all alone in the world. He had hesitated, hemmed and hawed, but in the end he'd scooped it up and tucked it into his jacket.
Now it was curled up in his scarf, still shivering intermittently from the dampness of its fur as Loki tried to think of what to do with it. He offered it bits of food but it didn't seem keen on eating anything while it shook from the cold. He petted it gently, taking some of the water out of its dark fur with his magic in the process. It nuzzled against his hand appreciatively and a bit of his ice-cold exterior fell.
When he was finally discovered unexpectedly later, he was sitting on the couch with the creature in his lap, an end of the scarf dangling in front of the whiskered face as he played with it. The clearing of someone's throat from the doorway startled him and he looked up abruptly.
He nearly groaned when he saw who it was. Of all the Avengers it had to be him...
"I didn't think you were capable of having a soft spot, Stetson." Tony stood leaning against the doorframe, an amused grin tugging at his lips as he eyed the agent and the kitten. "Or is this just your latest 'top secret' mission as one of SHIELD's babysitters?"
Loki aimed a glare at Stark but it simply bounced off the billionaire's smarmy facade and did no good. Sighing, Loki started to shift the bundle off his lap to stand when the kitten meowed in startlement. The god stopped moving and the kitten settled back down into his lap content as could be.
Trapped beneath the purring feline, Loki froze in place.
Stark laughed from his vantage point at the doorway. "Looks like someone has you wrapped around their tiny little tail. Cute."
This time Loki didn't bother with a glare. He just sighed and scratched behind the kitten's ear, not even trying to hide his fondness for the creature now. Intrigued, Stark pushed off the wall and moved across the room towards the unusual sight.
"It really does surprise me, Stetson, to see your ice prince exterior fall for even a second." He reached down to pet the kitten briefly. Oddly enough, the silence that fell between them as they both appreciated the softness of the feline's fur was comfortable rather than full of tension as Stark might have expected after his remark. The kitten really had put the agent firmly under its spell. For a moment, Stark was speechless.
His voice was quiet when he spoke next. "...it's nice to see that you really are human underneath all that frost."
He didn't catch the frown that marred Stetson's visage for the second after the remark was said. His attention was on the kitten and when he looked up later Stetson was looking up at him with this almost sad emotion in his eyes. Stark had to look away lest he try to analyze it. Though he hadn't seen it to make the comparison, the expression had looked a lot like the one the lost stray had made earlier out in the rain while it was on its own.
Later, a saucer of mostly licked away milk lay on the table in front of the couch as one Avenger watched with laughter as one agent of SHIELD attempted to untangle himself from the grasp of one "ferocious" little kitten as it chewed contentedly on the man's hand. Despite being trapped and laughed at, the infamous ice prince was smiling.
