"The alarms went off five times before I made off with it," he said, retelling the tale of how he stole Captain America's shield right out from beneath the Avengers' noses to his daughter. She listened astutely, holding the shiny piece of metal in her lap as she stared up at her father who spun the tale out with his hands and their gifted magic.
The first time he was a raccoon that lifted one of the bedroom windows open deftly at night. Unfortunately what he hadn't realized was that the humans had installed alarms all over the building. Well, he had realized it he just hadn't thought of it when he was gleefully planning out how fun it would be to run off with the shield as one of the infamous banded thieves of the night. He scurried quickly back out of the window as the little bird (Hawkeye) came running into the room with his arrow notched. Thankfully, the canary was too amused to shoot at the scampering raccoon and Loki got away scotch free. Later, he found, no one was the wiser that it had even been him as Hawkeye had not thought of the Trickster when he'd seen the raccoon but only remembered how the nocturnal animals had liked to try and steal things from his tent at the circus when he left sweets there after dark.
The second time he was a bird that flew through the roof entrance when Iron Man came in for a quick landing. No one noticed him until late that afternoon when he found it was impossible to traverse the mansion while lighter than a pile of feathers for none of the automatic doors would sense him to let him through. Eventually one of the cameras picked him up, frustrated and tired in his tiny form, floundering his wings in annoyance at the hallway door and JARVIS told the household of their unexpected visitor. As only Stark was currently in the burden of capturing the poor black bird fell to the Iron Avenger and again the mortal thought nothing of the random encounter for it was not the first time an unfortunate creature of flight had managed to get into one of his residences due to his penchant for easy access to the roof. Loki noted that he was very gentle in dealing with his raven form, making sure not to hurt him or damage his precious feathers unnecessarily. The shapeshifter squawked at the human in thanks as he was released outside though to Stark it probably only sounded like an annoyed bird calling out for his missing flock.
The third time he was a wolf spider that managed to crawl through all the tiny crevices that one would not think possible for anything to get through. In this way he bypassed all the doors that had prevented his bird form from getting to the precious item he wanted to steal. Yet even this form was just enough to set off the extra sensitive alarms set up in the armory. The Black Widow herself came rushing through the doorway, ready and eager for action. When she spotted no one in the room, relaxing in disappointment, she ordered JARVIS to run a scan and find out if the system was malfunctioning. It was not, the AI told her, and the curious agent went sniffing out the problem where the computer told her the alarms were triggered. Loki the wolf spider froze, thinking surely that of all the Avengers she would figure out who their animal pest truly was. But he was surprised when all she did was wrinkle her nose slightly when she spotted him and order the artificial butler to make an appointment for pest exterminators to come to the mansion, just to make sure this never happened again, she said. Then, even more to his surprise, she carefully shooed him onto a piece of paper and walked him to an outside window where she dumped him onto the sill, telling him to go make a home elsewhere least he be filled with poison within the week.
The fourth time he was the tiniest of ants and when he got into the armory this time when he crawled beneath the encasing holding the shield no alarms went off. Loki was ecstatic with joy as he reached out with his feelers and touched the prize. Unfortunately again he hadn't really thought things through. He had gotten in here without setting the alarms off--finally--but how was he to get out again doing the same? He decided that once was enough and he would simply teleport out of here once he had the shield in mandible. That's when the alarm went off, as soon as he lifted it off its base and into the air, and before he had time to make off with it through magical means the Captain himself came running through the door and headed straight for his shield to take off to supposed battle with him. The ant wasn't even noticed. Loki was so upset and disappointed that he didn't try again for a week.
The fifth time was the charm. Loki gave up trying to be crafty and simply walked right in, setting off all the bells and whistles alerting the Avengers to the presence of an intruder, and smashed the protective casing surrounding the shield with one easy strike of his palm. It was worth the expressions on all the Avengers' faces to linger long enough for them to rush into the room and find their thief standing there with the Captain's shield in one hand, the other waggling its fingers at them in greeting and farewell. With a wide grin, he disappeared before they could collect themselves and attack him.
"And that," the God of Mischief concluded with a fanfare of a hand gesture, "was how I stole the 'indestructible' shield of Captain America!"
